GEOLOGY OF ENGLAND.
The mountains and valleys of the north-ern range form the fascinating scenery roundthe lakes of Cumberland and Westmoreland, the gloomy grandeur of Craven in York shire , and the romantic dales of Derby shire . A magnificent view of the loftiest partof the northern range presents itself on theroad from Kirkby Lonsdale to Kendal; or oncrossing the sands from Lancaster to Ulver-stone, a more extended and distant view, com-prising the principal mountains of Cumberlandand Westmoreland, is seen from the heightsof Stanmore, on the road from Appleby toRichmond in Yorkshire . Helvellyn, Saddle-back, Skiddaw, and the mountains near Wi-nandermere and Coniston , are distinctly con-spicuous. Whoever has charmed away aportion of his existence among these moun-tains, whose forms he can here recognise atthe distance of forty miles, will
“ cast a longing, lingering look behind,”
as he turns from them for the last time in pass-ing southward.
