DEDICATION.

TO DAVID NAPIER, ESQ.,

ENGINEER, &c.,

WORCESTER , ENGLAND.

Sir,

To have lived abstracted in their pursuits, and to have died in obscurity is, alas ! too often thelot of the ardent and enthusiastic sons of science.

In announcing Mr Symington as the father of theSteam Navigation of the present day, we hope at thesame time to give just praise to his talents, anddue honour to his memory. And, it will< be ac-knowledged as matter of public regret, that whilstneither he nor his family have reaped the advantageof his discovery, that even of the honour of it toomany have succeeded in depriving him.

So connected is the application of Steam to Loco-motive Engines with the interests of Navigation atlarge, the extension of commerce, and the increase ofhappiness to the whole human race, that to you, Sir,as one of the most zealous and active promoters ofSteam Navigation in this country, the present Dedi-cation would he due; but beyond this, private esteeminduced us to request permission thus to subscribeourselves,

Your ever grateful, affectionate, and sincere friends,

J. & W. H. RANKINE.

Pleasance, Falkirk .
