Alexander Carlaw, formerly residing at Wan-lockhead in the county of Dumfries , now farmer ofPowfoulis in the county of Stirling , in that part of theUnited Kingdom called Scotland , maketh oath, andsayeth : That he knew William Symington, engineer ,at present residing in Falkirk in the said county ofStirling . That he has access to know that the saidWilliam Symington made certain experiments in theautumn of the year 1788, by applying a small steamengine to propefaboat on a piece of water near tfieTn5ns5~of Dalswinton in the county of Dumfries .That, in the summer preceding, he was instructed bythe said William Symington to forge various piecesof iron-work which were employed in the above-mentioned experiment. He further sweareth thatthe application of a steam-engine to the propelling ofa boat upon water, was generally said and universallybelieved the invention of the said William Symington ,and who was at that time patronised by PatrickMiller, Esq. of Dalswinton, now deceased ; and thedeponent understands, and it consists with his know-
