MATTHEW'WREN, D. D.

To the nineteenth Article, this Defendant answereth and denieth, that hecaused the Figure of Christ upon the Cross, to be engraven upon his episcopalSeal, thereby the more to manifest his popish Affection. And he faith, thathe utterly denieth all popish Affections; and that the Figure of Christ uponthe Cross may be had without any popish Affection ; and that the said Fi-gure upon his Seal, did itself declare what Affection it was to manifest. Forthere was this Posy engraven with it [Ev § K 6 <rjxo; ipo* rS KoV|u,«.] beingtaken out of St. Paul, Gal. vi. 14. and being applied to the same Purpose, and used with the same Affection (be it humbly spoken) that St. Paul thereused the same, God forbid (said St. Paul) that I should rejoice, but in theGross of our Lord Jesus Chris , "whereby the World is crucified unto me, and 1unto the World. In an holy Imitation whereof, this Defendant bearethdivers Coats of Arms (as the Use is) upon the said Seal, to wit, the Arms ofthe See of Norwich, and the Arms of the See of Hereford , and of theDeanery of Windsor, and of the Masters lip of Peter-house, together with hisown paternal Coat of an ancient Descent; he considering with himself, thatthese were Emblems all, and Badges but of worldly and temporal Glories, and desiring that the World should have a right Apprehension of him, and totestify that he did no Way glory in any Thing of this transitory World, buthumbly endeavoured to wean himself from all temporal and vain Rejoycings,he therefore caused such a small Figure of Christ on the Cross, to be setover all the laid Coats; as professing by that, that as he was only to preachChris crucified, 1 Cor. i.' 21. and that as he esteemed not to know any‘Thinghut Jesus Christ, and him crucified, x Cor. ii. 2. so much more, he had, andstill would strive to take Joy in none of these his Honours and Preferments,as they were human and worldly, but only would use them so, as if he hadthem not, and as if he were dead and crucified to them, and they to him ; butthat his whole Study, and Rest, and Rejoycing, should be in the Cross ofcur Lord Jesus, and that unto it he would cause all his worldly Estate (publickand private) to stoop and do Service.

1 his was all the Affection which this Defendant intended to manifest here-by ; and he humbly conceivetb, it was holy and truly Christian ; for the ex-pressing whereof to the World, those Coats of Arms giving him so good Op-portunity ; and for the assuring and impressing of so much into his own Soul,he alluding to those Words of the heavenly Spouse, to his Church, Pone meut figillum super cor tuum, Cant. viii. 6. therefore he (that never had, norused a Crucifix in all the World besides) thought it no Harm at all, nor anyWa y popish in him to use it upon his Seal.

And he humbly prayeth, that it may well he considered, how it canr, ghtly be surmised, that he had any popish Affection in that, or in himselfat ; whereas the Assizes for the County following soon after his pri-mary Visitation in Suffolk, he caused the Presentments of the said County(being about five Hundred) to be sent unto him from Norwich, and havinghimself perused them all, and extracted the Names of all such as, by theOaths of the Churchwardens, and other sworn Men, had been presented forPopish Recusants, he caused the same to be fairly ingroffed, by an Alphabet,ln Parchment, comprising the Christian and Surnames of two Hundred Per-sons, or thereabouts, and then affixed unto it this very Seal forenamed, andjo sent the fame unto the Lord Chief Justice, fedente curia, at the Assizes at^ Edmund’s-bury, which for a voluntary Act of his, never used before byan 'y other Diocesan, as it then testified under that Seal his true Zeal and Carethe Religion here in England established, so he hopeth, it may rightly“ e alledged now, to ssiew that the Figure of Christ upon the Cross in the
