The blocks of primitive Norwegian rocksscattered over the North of Germany ,Russia , Holland , and occasionally met withon the eastern coast of England, attestthe non-existence of the Baltic and Ger-man Sea, while these blocks were in mo-tion.

Pieces of granite are found on Staffa ,which could only have been brought thi-ther when Staffa was annexed to themain-land; and similar phenomena willprobably be found in every other part ofthe world, when they become objects ofinquiry.

The newest formations with which weare acquainted are intersected by valleys,and covered by alluvial deposits : hence itfollows that this event was posterior to thebirth of these formations.
