all the rest cared nothing about it! ! ! These thingsbeing since told me by the highest authority, I herenote them to shew the vile arts they have all alongbeen obliged to resort to, in order to prop up theirtottering cause ; for the fact is, that in every step 1have taken, I have only been the messenger andoccasional advocate of the trade at large, who haveemployed me as their agent on every occasion wherean opportunity might occur, in which they could havea chance to redeem their pledge. And though theyhave many times offered to raise money to pay formy time and expence, and a book was opened inLondon, in 1817, where many put down five guineasor upwards with their names, 1 always declined toaccept of a shilling until the work was finished, thatmy opponents might not be able to say I was work-ing for pelf.

The first article I select for the above purpose isa list of the memorials that were presented to hisRoyal Highness the Prince Regent, and also thepetitions that were presented to the hon. the Houseof Commons in the sessions of 1817, in the gettingup of which I had no hand, save that of being occa-sionally consulted on two of them as to the facts onwhich those documents were grounded ; for exceptin that of London, where some signatures were givenat a public meeting, from whence that documentemanated, and to which I might afterwards assist ingetting two or three names, I had nothing to dowith them, save that as the agent to those who sentthem up to hand them to those hon. gentlemen whowere to present them, and also as their advocateto explain any point in which those hon. gentlemenmigtj't wish for information.
