" Lord of Ireland, to all to whom" these Presents shall come, Greeting.

Be it known, that We have given" and granted, and by these Presents" do give and grants for Us and Our" Heirs, to our well-beloved John Ca->“ bot : , Citizen of Venice , to .Lewis-, Se-“ baftian, and Santius, Sons of the said" “John, and to their Heirs and.Astigns," and every of them, full and. free“ Authority, Permission and Power," to fail to all Parts, Countries and" Seas of the East, of the West, and." of the North, under our Bannerstf and Ensigns, with five Ships, of what-tc e.ver Burden or Quantity soever they" be,, and as many Mariners, or Men,“ asi they may desire to, have with them,<c in the said Ships, upon their ownproper Costs and Charges ; to seek* f out, discover and find whatsoever" Isies, Countries, Regions or Pro-" vinces of the Heathens and Infidels,«>« whatsoever they be, and in whatPart- of the World soever they be,which before this Time have been.unknown to all Christians. Provision of Food, andin buying of Victuals for their Mony,

Hackluyt, from whom I have ta-ken this Commission, places in theMargin, A.D. 1495. But, accordingto RymeV s Foedera, it was dated March5. 1496.

T o the Ship granted by the King,of which, however, this Commissionmakes no Mention, some Merchants ofLondon added three more, laden withsuch siightCommodities, as were thoughtproper for Commerce with barbarousPeople.
