Having secured a very smallkt Canoe, with two Oars, he, with" John Drake, and a young Man oftc the Company, took the Opportunity" of the Night to put off from the" Shoar. The River being nineteen" Leagues broad, in that Place, they* ( were three Days, in their Pastage,(e without any Sustenance. When they‘ c landed, they found a High Way,€t and feing the Tracks of Hones, theyfollowed it , ’till they came to a" House where Corn was sowed, and

" belonging to the Spaniards , who" gave them Meat, and something to" cover their Nakedness; while theyt( sent to acquaint the Captain of thePlace of their Arrival. He imme-" diately sent four Horsemen , who" carried them to the Town behind“ them.

" This Officer treated them with allte Civility, cloth'd and dieted them,and had Drake always at his own" Table. He designed to have sent" them to Spain ; But the Viceroy of" Peru sent for them.”

I do not any where find what cameof Drake, or any of his Company, af-terwards.

CHAP. XII.

Sir Humphry Oil berth Voyage to Newfoundland, in Order tosettle a Colony there .

I N the Year 1583. Sir HumphryGilbert, a Gentleman of great Re-putation, in Naval A stairs, and ofa very enterprising Genius, resolvedupon Planting a Colony in Newfound-' land, which, as I have said before, wasdiscovered by Cabot, in the Year 1497.

Sir Humphry had Letters Patentfrom the Queen, for the Inhabiting, andPlanting of People in America, in thefollowing Terms,

" Elizabeth, by the Grace of" God, Queen of England, St c. To" all People, to whom these Presents" shall come, Greeting. Know Ye," that of Our especial Grace, certain" Science, and meer Motion, We have" given and granted, and, by these" Presents, for Us, Our Heirs and" Successors, do give and grant to Our* r trusty and well-beloved Servant, Sir“ Humphry Gilbert of Compton inOur County of Devonshire, Knight,,v and to his Heirs and Assigns, forever, free Liberty, and Licence," from Time to Time, and at all,c Times, for ever hereafter, to difco-" ver, find, search out, and view such" remote. Heathen and barbarous" Lands, Countries and Territories, not

“ actually possessed of any ChriJUanPrince or People, as to him, hisHeirs and Assigns, and to every, or“ any of them, shall seem good; And
