side of the equator, the sun wilt be on thefame azimuth twice in the morning, andtwice in the afternoon.

Thus, suppose the globe rectified to thelatitude of Antigua, which is in about 17deg. of north latitude, and the fun to be inthe beginning of Cancer, or to have thegreatest north declination; set the quadrantof altitude to the 2.1st degree north of theeast in the horizon, and turn the globe uponits axis, the funs center will be on thatazimuth at 6h. 30 min. and also at roh,30 min. in the morning. At 8h. 30 min.the sun will be as it were stationary withrespect to its azimuth for some time; aswill appear by placing the quadrant of ahtitude to the 17th degree north of the eastin the horizon. If the quadrant be set tothe same degrees north of the west, the funscenter will cross it twice as it approachesthe horizon in the afternoon.

This appearance will happen more orless to all places situated in the torrid zone, whenever the suns declination exceeds theirlatitude; and from hence we may infer, that the shadow of a dial, whose gnomonis erected perpendicular to an horizontal
