The number of burners employed in allthe buildings amounts to 2J1 Argand, and 653cockspurs, each of the former giving a lightequal to that of four candles of the descriptionabove-mentioned ; and each of the latter alight equal to two and a quarter of the samecandles ; making therefore the total of the gas-light a little more than equal to that of 2500candles, six to the pound. When thus regu-lated, the whole of the above burners requirean hourly supply of 1250 cubic feet of the gasproduced from canncl-coal; the superior qua-lity and quantity of the gas produced from thatmaterial having given it a decided preferencein this situation over every other coal, not-withstanding its higher price.

The time during, which the gas-light isused may, upon an average of the whole year,be stated at least at two hours per day of 24hours. In some mills, where there is overwork, it will be three hours j and in the fewwhere night work is still continued nearly 12hours. But taking two hours per day as thecommon average throughout the year, theconsumption in Messrs. Philips and Lees millwill be 1250 + 2 = 2500 cubic feet of gasper day; to produce which 700 weight of
