The Mesentery is that Membranous Part, which Colligares the Inteßmes ,and Fixes thcir Situation ; and gives to them the Order of their Figure. For the Inteßines are no: just Fastened to the Peripherie, or Outward Cir-cumference of the Mefenterie ; but the Outward Membrane of the Mesente-rii of both sides, is entirely Projected and Continued over the whoieCanalis, or Duil of the Guts ; and is to thetn the Outward or CoramonMembrane. So that öften, by separating this Outward Membrane frotnwhat lies under it, the Afujcular, l have Extracted the whoie length of theGuts, leaving only the Common Membrane, astis Continued frotn that ofthe Mefenterie, which I could Inflate, as if the whoie of the Guis Remained. Now here we observed that Remarkable Difference from what is in many o-ther Animals, that we cannot but make Two Mefenteries : one peculias tothe Small Guts, the other belonging to the Great Ones.

The Former 1 fhall call Mesenterium Minorum , and the Latter MesenteriumMajorum Intestinorum : For as the Duodenum Uescended from the Stomach,it ran under the Colon (just where 'tis joined to the Cascum) towards theMiddle of the Spine. Hence I found a ProjtFlibn of the First Mefenterieinto a Spiral Line, like a Cochlea or Ainding Pair of Stairs; So that uponInflation , these Inteßines here made feveral Cunvolutions tho not exactlySpiral The Second Mefenterie was Projtcted more in a Plain ; and madealmost a Circular Figure at its Peripherie : So that the Cacum, and Colon, did alaiost entirely Epcircle the Small Guts.

The Reverse ot this Structure of the Inteßmes I formerly found in the A-natomy of the Tajacu, for there the Colon made a Spiral Figure, and theSmall Guts made a PLin But this Spiral Convolution of the Inteßinesis also to be met with in feveral other Animals, though their Structurebe Difrerent, as in the Goai and Deer kind ; and very Rcmarkably in »Wood Ccck

The Small Guts Measured about 6| Feet in Length ; the Cacum was a-bout 6 In ehe s Long and the Colon and ReSlum 2 Foot long. The Girth ofthe Duodenum (l mean all along here as InflatedJ was 3 lnches j the Ileon# lnches , the Girth of the Catum in the Largest place, was 6 lnches ;ot the Colon 4 lnches : And the Rettum was 3 lnches about. From theSpine to the Uttnost Projectionof the Small-Guts , funder the fame Circum-flance of Inflation) we Measured about 6 lnches -, the greatest Diameter thatthe Colon in this Circular Figure made, was sömewhat above 7 lnches. Inthe whoie DuSt or Canalis ot the Inteßines, 1 could not observe any Valver,no not at the Cacum it seif.TisTrue, that the Foramen into the Cacum, was a great deal lese than the Capaciry of the Gut it seif: However thePassage into it was so Open and Wide, as readily to Receive or Emit itsContents.

But the Lengtb and frequent Gjrations and Windings ot the Inteßmes fup-ply this wanto iValves-, they Prevent.the Langer ot a Too Halt y Defcentof rhe Faces, and give a greater Opportunity to the Separation ot theChyle into the Fast Chflifera. And the Cochlea or Spiral Fsgure of the Ftrß
