PLATE LXXIX.

The larva, and pupa, of most species of the Gryllus genus, scarcelydiffer in appearance from the perfect insect, except that in the tvvofirst states they are apterous, or without wings, and either leap orwalk; but in the last state they are furnished with four membranaceouswings.

The subject of our present description is not an unfrequent speciesnear London ; it is taken in the perfect state in the month of August.

SPECIFIC CHARACTER,

Antennæ very long. Thorax green, with a longitudinal line ofyellow. Anterior wings membranaceous, green. Posterior wingsvery delicate pale green. Body pale green, with the three last joint*pale black.

It is very plenty in the month of August, is concealed among thefoliage of the lower branches of the oak in the day-time, and is notoften observed to fly except when the morning dew is on the herbage,or evening approaches. Leaps, if disturbed.
