It may be necessary to remark, that in this experiment thepoint of the wire n, in the circulation of the electric fluid, shewsa star, and the point m of the other wire a brush.

Experiment II. in Magnetism, smilar to the preced-ing one.

Take two needles, lay them point to point, and touch themwith a magnet, by moving it along them from end to end, without separating the needles. The two points of the needles,it is well known, will, in this cafe, have the one a north, andthe other a south pole. Fix the needles in two small pieces ofcork, and put them in water, with their points opposite to andat a little distance from each other. They will then mutuallyattract each other, and join.

As I intend to ground a new theory upon the experiments Ishall offer in this chapter, I shall not, for reasons hereafter tobe mentioned, make any observations upon them till I have re-lated the whole of what I intend in this class.

Experiment III. in Electricity, to prove there is a

mutual repellency in the outfide coatings of the two jars , when they

are both suspendedfrom one conduSlor.

Suspend the two jars from the conductor G, as far as youconveniently can from each other. Take two wires, and bendthem in such a manner, that when fixed on the glass stands, with their knobs in contact with the outside coatings of the jars, the threads may be opposite to each other at the ends of thewires. When the apparatus is prepared, turn the cylinder ofthe machine, and in this cafe the threads will repel each other.
