out being in the least incommoded by theWarmth of the Fire, in the following Man-ner, viz. Having caused a Chimney at thePrincess of Wales'& House at Kew to be firstswept, a small common Fire grate was fixed upthe Chimney, with its lower Part a Foot abovethe Mantle-piece. When there was a Firekindled in the Grate, the Draught of theAir up the Chimney was more than doubleof what it was when the Fire-grate stood be-low on the Hearth in the common Way; aswas evident, by holding a broad Linen-clotb,from the Mantle over the Face of the wholeChimney, which was by the strong Indraftof the Air blown up to the Fire-grate, asalso by the greater Indraft of the Air at theopened Door-case; as was very sensibly to beperceived by a large Linen-cloth suspendedover the open Door-case; as also by the muchgreater Velocity in the Twirlings of a smallBrass Wind-mill, fixed at a round Hole aboutfix Inches diameter, in the upper Part of aWindow. Some very reasonably propose therefreshing the Chambers, or Wards of theSick, by causing Air to pass through Clothsdipped in Vinegar, or by hanging such Clothspi Chambers of the Sick.
