CAMERON’S ENGINE.
the middle of its length, the piston rod passedthrough it, and had two pistons, one working inthe upper division, and the second in the lower. The upper compartment above its piston, wasopen to the air, the lower to the steam, and theinjection was introduced into the cy Under, underthe piston, while the other piston served the pur-pose of an air-pump.
This was a clever arrangement of Newcomen’sengine, but yet it could only be introduced whereit was decided to use an atmospheric apparatus, even although consuming three times the fuel thanwas sufficient to work Watt’s condensing engine. But it is true that this and similar schemes foundpatrons ; for from prejudice, or some less worthymotive, there were individuals, who would notaccept the boon of Watt’s improvement, al-though, by doing so, they would save a greatsum annually, because the inventor insisted onhaving a part of this saving, as a reward for hisingenuity.
