Of this Series there are two Classes.

‘The first is, of those which are moifl and friable, The Compound Earths.The second is, of those which are dry and hard, The Stones.

The Compound EARTHS.

Fossils, ccmpos'd of argillaceous or marley particles, separated and divided by adventi-tious matter, and never found free from these mixtures, or in the slate of pure Earths.

Of this Class there are two Orders, and under those sour Genera,

- Compound EARTHS.Order the first.LOAMS.

Earths, compos'd of dissimilar particles, hard, fliff, dense, harsh and rough to thet°uch • not easily duBile while moifl, readily diffusible in water, and compos'd of SandGn d a tough viscid Clay.

Compound EARTHS.

Order the second.

MOULDS.

Earths, compos'd of dissimilar particles, of a loose, soft texture ; somewhat duBile^rile r,ioisl, compos’d of argillaceous particles, separated by Sand, or the Gritt of Stone,° n d usually sound mix’d with the putrify d remains of ammal and vegetable bodies.
