In taking the dimensions of vaults, first measurethe hutments to the springing of the arch, and af-ter bend your rods round the arch for the width.The length of the place is undoubtedly the length.If the vault is groined, after you have measuredthe superficial content you must also measure therun or angles of the groin, which are always consi-dered at least as superficial feet extra, and some-times an additional price allowed, which will bestipulated in the practice of brick-work hereafter.There is one thing in the dimensions of end-wallsto vaults that ought to be noticed, which is therising of the crown of the arch ; to which part theheight of the end-walls must be taken. No allow-ance either for stuff or labour must be made for thewant of the declivity of the arch, on account of theadditional trouble of cutting and waste of bricks.The fame thing must also be observed with respect
