The eflential oils are employed in medicine,in perfumery, and in the compofition of var-nifhes and of oil paints ; to which latter purpofethe oil of Turpentine is almoft entirely ap-propriated.

Oils Vegetable Empyregmatic.

Almoft every vegetable matter when fub-jedled to dry diftillation affords a quantity ofoil, varying according to the nature of the fub-ftance, and the circumftances of the experiment. The oil thus produced has not been lubjedtedto very accurate examination, yet may be de-cribed as poflefling the following characters, its colour is yellowifh-red pafling into blackifh-re , it has a ftrong odour, and an acrid empy-reumatic tafte; it is more volatile than thexe 01 s, but lefs fo than the proper eflential

ones: by re-diftiilation with a little water it

comes over nearly colourlefs, and more volatilethan before, though ftill poffefled of much ofits empyreumatic flavour. Two of thefe oilsnamely, tar and birch oil, are of confulerableimportance ; for an account of the firft we fhallrefer the reader to the article Turpentine .The latter is prepared in Ruflia, by charringbirch wood in a clofe oven, the watery acid andoil are colle&cd in a large receiver, and thelatter produft being the ligheft is fkimmed offfrom the furface of the water. This oil has apeculiar feent, and is faid to drive away wormsand other infedls, on which account it is ufedin the dreffing *>f Ruflia leather, to which itcommunicates thofe properties that render it fomuch efteemed by the binders of books.
