Th h Duke of Buckingham * being ac the sane Timeunder Disgrace for Things of another Nature, they re-solved to go in Search of Adventures ; among many ofwhich, this was one : There happens an Inn on New~market Road to be lett; they disguise themselves fit forthe Persons they were to assume, and jointly take thisInn, in which, each in his Turn, officiates as Master.But this being not done either for absconding from theAnger of their Sovereign, or the Sake of selling Ale,they soon set themselves to pursue the more pleasing Aimof their Rambles. They having observed such of thepretty Girls of the Country as they fancied most, (theyconsidered not whether Maids, Wives, or Widows,) togain Opportunities, they invited the Country round, atleast those Neighbours that had these Wives or Daugh-ters, .to frequent Feasts; where the Men were plied hardwith good Liquor, and the Women sufficiently warmed,£ o make but as little Resistance as would be agreeable totheir Inclinations: Doubly qualifying both Sexes, theMen with Wine and strong Liquors, and the Womenwith Love.

You r Grace must not imagine, that this Sort ofLife could be of any long Duration, because Feasts socommon, and that without any Thing to pay, mustgive a shrewd Suspicion that the Hosts must soon break,or that they were of Circumstances much superior to thePosts they were in. This they were sensible of, normuch concerned about it, since they were seldom fond oflong continuing the fame Sort of Adventures; Varietybeing the Life of their Enjoyments. It was* besides,near the Time of his Majestys going to Newmarket iwhen they designed that a Discovery of their real Plots
