UF all the various Means and Causes whichconcur, whether to the Rife, or the Esta-blishment of Empires, none hath greaterInfluence than the good Choice Princesmake of their Generals'and Ministers.

But not to enter into a long histo-rical Detail upon a Subject so well understood, it is in-contestable, according to the Abbe de Vertot *, the Au-thor of this Memoir, that if Agrippa by his Valour madeAuguflus Master of the Empire, it was Maecenas , whoby his Wisdom and political Address, fix’d the new Do-mination on a firm and stable Basts f.
