XXIV. Lastly, those very defects, whichhave hitherto been supposed marks of the ma-teriality of our fouls, by the help of a littleattention, plainly strew the contrary. Whatis the cause that while awake, I am sensibleof external action; and not sensible of it whileafleep? A material Percipient within me oughtat that time also to perceive the action of ex-ternal objects j or not to perceive it, becauseof some disorder in matter. And thus theperceptivity and activity of matter strould wearout once in the four and twenty hours; tillthe disorder were rectified, and that disposi-tion restored, which made it living and sensi-ble. Again, I cannot subsist without food, tho’but for a few days; nor toil constantly, butfor one whole day perhaps, without runningthe whole œconomy into disorder. These and athousand other instances thew that, if activi-ty and perceptivity belong to matter, they be-long to some certain order and disposition of it.There is no appeal from this conclusion (s).
