How to make the Face white.

T T*u he formerly in my Book of P j ants, That with white deer Silver-coloured* Herbs, Shei-Fiih,and Stones, the Face might be made wi'ite,polished and Siivcr-coioarcd. 1 shall now set down some examples, by which you ma) invent manymore. I shall first speak of Simples, then of Compounds : Simples that arewnuejmake t he face white. The Lilly is a complete white colour : the bulbous tops of it,likeOoyons boyled in water, or the distilled Water of them, will make the Facesof Maides white , if they wash them therewith , morning and evening. With-wiod bears a Flower like to the Lilly , without any smell; but within like Saffron:it is oncly wnite , and is as it were the Rudiments of Nature, when she goes aboutto tr im * a Lilly. The distilled water from the flowers will wonderfully make theFace whole. Also with the decoction os Ivory, one may make the Face like Ivory;Mdanthium makes the Face beautiful. Diofcortdes. But it shews its excellencywhen it is thus prepared: Pown it,and sift out the finest of it, take the juice of Lem-n;on<, and icr the Meal ©f Gkh lie wet in k twenty four hours; take it out, andlet it dry: then break an Egg with the Shell, and mingle it with it: then dry it in theshade,and sift it once more. In the morning, when the woman riseth out of herbed, let her put this into a white Linen-clouc, that is not too fine, and wet it withwater or spittle ; and let her rub her Face with the clout, that the moysture alone,and uot the Meal, may come on the Face. it may be made ar white ar Milk many ways, and chiefly with these that follow : Let

Litharge ot Silver , half an ounce , boyl in a Glared Earthen Pot, with strongVinegar, until the thinner part be evapora r ed: set it up for use. Then , in anotherPot ; let half a pound of clear water boyl: then mingle both these waters together,and shake them ; and it will become like Milk, and sink to the bottom : when itis settled, pour k off ; water being plentifully poured in : and leaving it a while toscute, pour it off again, and pour on fresh; shake it, and leave it to sett e a shoretime, and so forbear. That which is settled, set in the Sun and when ic is grewnstiff, as thick pap* make small balls of it, and lay them up. You may use these withwater to make the Face white. O. else powder Lvtharge of Silver, eight ounce*,very kne: pour on the Powder, of the strongest Vinegar five pints : distil them, andkeep them for your use. Then take A Home de Plume , Salt Gemma, one drachm ;Frankincense, one ounce and a half; Camphire, two drachms j Oyl of Tartar , sixounces Rose-water, one pound : powder What must be powdered, and pour it in:diiiil the water in Cbymical Vessels, and set it up. When you would use them,mingle ali tie of both waters in the palm of your hand, and it will be like Milk:sub yoUr Face with it ,j and it will be white. Or else take off the Pills of abouttwenty Citron Lemmons ; infuse the Pills in one pound of the best Wine, and onepint and in half of Rose-water, for six days: then add one ounce of white Lilly antsMiUoW-floots, and let them stay as many days: then add Rosin of Turpentine,fourounces j white Mercury sublimate, two ounces } Boxan,half an ounce - ten whitesof Eggs made hard at the fire: and gle all these together: let them stay one night.The next day, put a cap upon theVeltei,and luting the joynts well,that nothing maybreath forth, let the water drop into a Vessel to receive it: set it aside for Use. Iuse this, that i-easie co make, and doth the business completely: Take the whiteof an Egg, and stir it so long with an Iron, that it froth well: let it stand to turn towater: then take half an ounce of the best Honey, and beat with that water, andmingle them Until they unite : add to them the quantity of two Corns of Whear,of Mercury sublimate, finely powdered j when you goto bed,take some of the waterin the palm of your hand, and Wash your Face; and so let it dry in, that it may norstick ro the l inen. in »l,e mnmin<, wash it off with Fountaiu-Water, and you shall
