Shews to catch living Creatures with your hand^'

and to destroy them.

The Proem*.

F shall speaks of Fawknirgy th-it most men, and especially great men, delight tn, If

you will catch living creatures , they are taken byforse, or by craft. They are takenby craft, and kided. But how that may be done, shall be taught in Philosophy , that shews theNatw e and manners of living Creatures: For it is eajitywhen you know their Natures andtheir Manners y cunning may find ways to allure and take them. Fir fly i shall teach how toallure and take theniy by meaty whisky light, smelly love , and other frauds ; or else to makethem drunky and take th. m, or to kill them with venome. Ishall set down examples.

Here is nothing that more allures and draws on Animals, thenjjr« meat and pleasure , and love. Wherefore from these (hall I be-gin. They follow meat for necessity ; unless they would dyefor hunger, they must search for that -. But divers CreaturesKM feed on divers meats, and some of them feed on particular diet;and you may goess at the rest'thereby by your own reason.

Surgecns or Whales arc allured with the Lung; of a Bull rolled , hung upon a linewith a hook, call into the sea ; the Sturgeon presently smels it, and being greedy ofir,prefenrlv swallows it down. and is caught with the hook : Oxen draw him to the(here. zÆlian.

A bait for a Sargus.

The Sarpus loves Goats exceedingly, as we (hall (hew, and hunts after the smell ofthem Wherefore the Fisher-man wets his paste in Goats blood, and casts it intothat part oft he sea where they haunt ; and they are drawn thither by the sent of it,as by a charm, and arecatched with the hook. Moreover, if men fasten to the hookthe bait that is made of a Mouse fish faired , and move this gently in the sea, the Sar-gi will come to it exceedingly, and gather about the hook for the love of it, and areeafi'y caught by their greediness after the meat.

Ticinus a River in Italy prodticeth a fish called Thymalus, that is not taken with thedainty baits that other fish are,but onely with the Gnat, an enemy to man ; and (hedelights in no other bait.

The bait for an Aulopiw.

Coracini, blackfish, whose heads (bine like Gold, allure the Aulopii; when they ob-serve some such dainty food, and they come to it rejoycing.
