How to ex trail Oyl out of Gums.
T Hcre is a peculiar Extraction of Oyl cut of Gums; which, although they fe-quirc the fame means almost as the former, that is, the mixing them wkh Wi.ters, and macerating them tor many days, then puuingthem imo a Brats-pot, aodby a vehement fire, forcing cut the Oyl with the Water; yet doth i come out but ina small quantity of an excellent odor, and free from the stink of the fire ; as thusthey ulually deal with Opoponax,Galbanum, Storax, and others. But they are di-stilled also another way, by Asti-es; which doth requite the diligent at tendance ofthe Work-man, and a singular judgement and provident dexterity in him : for it israther an ingenious then painful Operation. I will let down an example,
How to ex trail Oyl out of Benjamin,
Miceratethe Benjamin inRole-wtter; or omitting that, put it into a Retort : set theRetort into a Pot full of Sandjso that it may tilt up the space between the sides of thePot,and bottom of the Retort: put the neck of it into a Reed er with a wide belly:kindle the fire by little and little ; and without any haste or violence of heat, letthe Water distil : by and by increase the fire, that the Oyl may flow out; yet nottoo intensely,sot fear of burning ; but moderately between boih : the oyly vaporswill straight fill all the Receiver ; then will they be condensed and turn into flakes,like Wool ; and sticking to the sides and middle of the Glass, pi esc nt yon with*pleasant IpeSac’iC: by and by they are turned into little bobbles, so into Oyl, andfall down to the bottom: keep the fire in the lame temper, until all the Fcces aredried jthen remove it, or fear of ustion.
Oyl of Storax
is drawn in the same manner ; but if the Storax be liquified, it will run with a gentlefire: it is of a strong and auick odcr. CaLmites r« quire- a mere lively stie , Inch aswas used iaa Benjamin, and a diligent attendance: for too much fire will cause acuityon in it,
Oyl of Ladanum.
Beat the ladanum, and macerate it fifteen days in jtefuaV'ita , or Greek Wine ; atleast ten: for the Ion et it infuseth, the sooner it wilimn into Oyl : draw It with Ogentle fire, it wist distil out by drops atter the Water,
Ojl tf Turpentine
is extracted easily ; for it floweth with a gentle fire : bur beware in the operation,that no fmoak do evaporate cut of it $ sot k presently will take fire, and with a mag-netick vertue attract the flame,and carry it into the Retort,where it will hardly be ex-tinguished again : which will happen in the extraction c{
Oyl of Olives , and Linseed Oyl.
If you distil common Oyl, it will hardly run ; yctemreasingthe fire, it will comeout in six hours: ycu must be verv careful, that the Ashes and Pot do not wax toohot: for if the Oyl wii bin take fire, it will break the Vessels, and file up, that itcan hardly be quenched, and reach the very deling; so that it is best to operateupon Oyls in arched Rooms. From hence Artificers of Fire-works, learned toput Oyl in their Compositions, because it quickly taketh fire , and is hardly ex-tinguished.
