iLet'the pipe be of Earth (but lead is better) or cf any matter well closed , that tHevokdmay nor get forth in the longp'aslage ; for whatever you speak at one end, the'voke'withOur any difference^ it came torth of the speakers mouth, canes so to the' ears ot him that hearkneth ; and I doubt not but this may be done some miles off.1 he voyce not cividcd or scattered, goes whole a long way. I have tried it for abovetwo hundred paces , when 1 had no other convenience, and the words were heard1 io clear, and open, as the speaker uttered them : Upon this it came into my mind, teintcrcept words spoken by the way, with leaden pipes, and to hold them so longas I pleased close in; that wheel opened the hole, the words should break forth.I perceive that the sound gees by degrees , and that being carried through* pipe, icmay be shut up in the middle; and if a very lcngTiunk should takeaway the conve-nience of it, that many winding pipes might shut it up in a close place. I read thatAlberm made an Artificial head , that spake at a set time : I might hope to do the same by this invention ; yet 1 never tried this farther then I have said: yet I haveheard by my friends, that lovers have spoke a long time through a leaden pipe, froththeir Houses that flood far asunder.

Chap. XIII.

By night we may ma{e signs by fire , and with dufi by day*

tT remains to shew whether we can make signs in the night by fire, andintbedayby cuff, re declare cur business. That may fall out two ways: For by fire of asudden, we shew to our confederate friends, orwhenwe please, by certain numberscfTcrcbes, wetepreltnt letters fit tedemonfftate what our purpose is, that thosethat are fat off, feeing and observing the motions may perceive our intent. The firstway, we read that Medea premiled to the Argonauts, that if she killed Pelias, shewould sigrifie so much unto them by night with fire frrm a watch-Towcr, and byday with smoke. When therefore the business was ifftcted, as she would have it,(he counterfeited, that she muff pay her vows to the Moon, by making afire, bylighting Toicl es in the open Air, frrm the top of the place,as she had premised; andwhen the Argonauts understood it thisway, they invaded the Kir.gs palace, andkilling the guard, they made bertoerjoy her wishes. We read also that Uitaga ,having pe (fistic nos Parctonium, agreed with the watch , that at night in the evening, and again in the morning betimes, they should let up the light that was ft r confede-racy ; and by that means signs were made, that the messenger came as far as Clius; Also to friends that live cut of the City, by fire we fray sigrifsecur reverew, aud thequality of ptovisicn. It is apparent, that Annibal, as Pclybiw Writes, when the peo-ple ofAgtigenum were besieged by the Rrtnans, by many and frequent fires bynight, did thew forth the intolerable fatnine of his Army, and for that cause many ofhis Sculciets, fox wart of victuals, fell off to the enemy. Also the Grecians compa-cted with Sinon , that by night, when the Trojans were asleep , those that ametoTroy should have a token, when he should open the Trojan Horic, to let forththe Swlildiers that were within. Whence Virgil,

Also by Torches letters may be signified , as we find it in the Manuscript of Polybm.Tops of buildings or Towers, arc very fit to set up the Torches on. Let the lettersbe divided iniotworr three pans, if there may be eleven, or seven parrs of each.If they be seven , the first letters are shew'd by single Torches, the second by dou-ble ones , the third by three Torches. The number maybe also divided into sourparts: but in reprenlertirgthem, we must observe the variety of motion. ForoneTorch rrce liftedup, shall sigrifie A, the same lifted up twice B, thriceC; lo seventimes: the last of the first order G, after that two once H, fe many twice I, thricesignifies L, and loos the rest of the fame order. Then O by the third order, once,
