Large Triple-Cylinder Molding and Flooring Machine.
With Preparatory under Cylinder and Beader.
This machine is believed, to he the largest and most powerful Molding Machine ever constructed. It will work from to 8" in thickness, and from34" to 15" in width, on all four sides at one operation. It possesses all theadvantages of both the Outside and Inside Molder without their disadvantages.The framing is of the most massive and substantial construction. It has sixheavy feed rolls 8" in diameter, two pair in front of the upper cutting cylinderand one pair after the side heads and last lower cutting cylinder, by whichthe lumber is fed entirely out of the machine.
They are mounted in swinging cranes cast in one piece, with an extensionover the upper part of the roller, affording a rigid outside bearing for the outerend. The shafts are all extra large in diameter, with long journals lead finished,and bearings heavily lined. The rolls are powerfully geared and heavily weighted,making a feed works of the most reliable character.
The bed is gibbed and supported at each end with a cross support its fullwidth. It is raised and lowered by screws actuated by a lever. The movementof which is easy and positive. It has two lower cylinders. The first, a prepara-tory cylinder for smoothing the under surface of material before it reaches thetop or main cylinder located between the first and second sets of feed rolls, thesecond or finishing cylinder near the opposite end. Both are mounted in mov-able frames and adjustable vertically, they can be also withdrawn endwise whenaccess is desired to the cutters for sharpening or changing. Each also has avertical movement with the bed.
Attention is invited to the new method and arrangement of mounting thepressure bars before and after the cut of the upper cylinder, which has all theadvantages of our Lightning Flooring Machine. The cylinders are of cruciblesteel; the first or preparatory cylinder carries three knives; the others areslotted on their faces for four cutters, and each has an endwise adjustment.
The upper or main arbor is 2 A" diameter, supported in three heavy bear-ings; the outer one is removable. The side heads are 7" in diameter, the arbors2 t \" diameter, and run in heavy, gate-way frames gibbed to the bed. They havea simultaneous vertical adjustment with the bed, and a separate independentvertical adjustment, also a crosswise adjustment upon the bed. The heads areinterchangeable. A beading attachment is arranged in the pressure bar overthe lower cylinder with adjustable heads. It has also a removable outside bear-ing support. The outside head and arbor with its weighted chip-breaker traveltogether across the bed to the desired distance.
Automatic adjustable pressure rollers are mounted upon the bearings boxesof the feed roll shafts. They have a simultaneous vertical movement with thefeed rollers and also independently of them, to suit the thickness to be worked,or for varying the pressure. The feed-works are of the strongest possible char-acter, with a train of especially heavy gearing. It has six rates of feed adaptedto the smallest molding, or the widest, heaviest material, varying from 24 ' to80' per minute. The countershaft is independent of the machine, so any desiredlength of belt can be secured. The weight, boxed ready for shipment, is 15,000pounds.
The tight and loose pulleys are 14"xl0", and should make 1,000 revolutions.
