Double Blind-Slat Planing Machine.
Planes Both Sides with the Grain of the Wood .
A Blind-Slat Planing Machine that will dress the four sides of slats with thegrain of the wood at all times and produce perfectly smooth wort is a wantlong felt. The great objection to machines as heretofore constructed has beenthat this could not be accomplished at one pass, and consequently there was alarge loss when finished on an ordinary Four-Side Molding Machine, as one sidewould be necessarily dressed against the grain.
With this machine every slat can be planed smoothly and accurately at onepass through the machine. It is, in fact, two separate machines in one, viz., aOne-Side Sash Machine for planing the top side, and a Three-Side Molder forplaning the opposite side and both edges.
The frame is heavy and strong, with the countershaft placed at a sufficientdistance from the cutter arbor to give good length of belts.
There are two tables gibbed to the frame, one placed just before and inadvance of the other; both are raised or lowered independent of each other bymeans of a screw.
The material is fed over the first table and under a cutter-head that dressesone side, and as it leaves the cutter-head the operator reverses it endwise andpasses it under the feed-rolls to the upper table, when it is carried betweencutter-heads that finish it on the opposite side and edges. The arbors are ofcrucible steel, lead-ground, run in long self-oiling bearings, and have all thenecessary adjustments to suit different classes of work.
The feed-rolls are of large diameter, strongly geared, and have spring press-ure which yields to varying thicknesses of material. There is a friction-roll ineach table. Each upper head has our combined bonnet and pressure-bar andcan be swung entirely out of the way for ready access to the cutters for pur-poses of removal or adjustment.
Narrow heads and cutters for sticking sash, muntins, trunk-slats, smallmoldings, etc., can be used if desired. A full complement of springs, wrenches, etc., accompanies each machine.
The tight and loose pulleys are 8"x4", and should make 850 revolutions.
