Four-Spindle
Automatic Horizontal Car Boring Machine.
With Automatic Elevating Boring Spindle Frames.
This machine is similar to that shown on the preceding page. It has fourboring spindles, each fitted with a different-size anger, and all carried in heavy, connected frames with long bearings, intended to avoid the necessity of fre-quently changing augers. Each spindle frame has an automatic power raisingattachment to secure its vertical movement, driven by friction gearing, con-trolled by a hand-lever.
The vertical movement of the spindles is 10"; the horizontal movement16", and they will bore through 14" timber. The spindle frames are mountedin planed ways, with square-thread screw connecting with the gearing. Thespindles are of large diameter, lead-ground, with end bearings of gun metal andself-oiling chambers. The pulleys are also large, securing an abundance of power.
The countershaft is usually placed above. One belt only is required toconvey the power to all the spindles. It is a very convenient machine, atall times under complete control of the operator, and capable of doing a verylarge amount of work. The table is long, and has friction rolls for supportingthe timber; also a fluted roll for moving the material to a determinate point.
The tight and loose pulleys are 12"x5}4", and should make 850 revolutions.
