So the Earth was at first cloathed with all jtarts of Herbs and Trees,* and both Earth i.and Water furnished with Inhabitants. Andthis the Ancients understood by their Stxtdxr jy umg.

But whether out of præ-existing Seeds, asI fuppole, or not, certain it is that God atthat time did give an extraordinary and mi-raculous power to the Land and Water ofproducing Vegetables and Animals : and af-ter there were as many of every kindbrought forth as there were Seeds createdat first ; or as many as it seemed good tothe Divine Creator to produce withoutSeed; there remained no further ability inthose Elements to bring forth any more;but all the succeeding owe their original toSeed; God having given to every Species apower to generate or propagate its like.
