rabie enough. It is true, the Medulla Spinalis was not here of that Con-sistence as in Adult Perfons ; but one could with forne pajns observeali the 4 Tunicks, and the two Substances as in the Brain, to wie theCortical or Glandulous f ubstance, and the Fibrous or white, but with thisdifferencc, that the brown Substance is exterior in the Brain, but interiorin the Medulla Spinalis, for it isasitwerea zd Brain contained in theCanalof the Vertebres, (o framed for its dcfence ; for there are Meningts as in theBrasst , Sinus’s and Cavities which may pasi for Ventrtdes : In a word, onecan fay all of it that they can of the Brain, and more, foritappears moresensible and necesiary for the Life, for you can take the Brain or Cerebellumfrom an Animal, and yet the Animal fhall live forne time thereasierj but aWoundor Compreilion of the Medulla Spinalis will cause sudden Death. Thisis confirm’d by feveral Anatomical Experiments, t. M Du Vemcy , 1673. tookthe Brain and Cerebellum fforn a Pigeon, and in place thereof filled the Cra-nium withFlax, notwithstanding which it lived lomc time, searched for Ali-ment,did the ordinaryFunctioni of Life, and had the use of Sense. 2. M. Chirac,Profeffor of Anatomy ac Montpelier, took the Brain from a Dog,yet he liv’d fornetime, but when the Cerebellum was taken out hedy’d immediately ; but he ha»observed, that by blowing into the Lungs the Animal has lived an Houral-though wantmg the Cerebellum. 3. He took from another Dog half of theCerebellum, but he dy’d immediately. 4. Aster he had taken half the Brainfrom a 3 J Dog, the Dog continued to have the Motion of all the part-, andcould walk aböut ; and even aster he had taken away all the Uram, he hadyet Sense and Respiration. 5. Heseparated the Medulla Oblongata of a 4thDog from the Medulla Spinalis, by introducing a pair of Scissars between thefirst Vertebre and the Os Occipitis, the Dog had dy’d immediately, but byblowing into the Lungs, the Motion of the Heartc ontinucd, and the Ani-mal could move his Body. 6. He took the Cerebellum from a zth Dog, buthe lived 24 Hours, and his Heart beat well.

All thesc Experiments let us see, that an Animal may live some time tho’imperfectly, v/anting the Brain, and even the Cerebellum, but there is no Ex-periment where ever they lived wanting all ; therefore I humbly conceive, the Medulla Spinalis was not here wanting, for it has fiipplied the defect ofthe Brain and Cerebellum, and the Animal Spirits have been feparated anddistributed for continuing the Circulation of the Blood. For ’tis to be con-side red, that altho' the Inter costal Nerve and Eighth Pair have their Originein the Medulla Oblongata, yet aster their entry into the Caviry of the Breafhthey are united with Branches from almost ali the Vertebral Nerves, and withthem make up feveral Plexu?s, and from those Plexus's, feveral Branchesare emitted that go to the Heart, and other Parts, sufficient for the con-tinuing the Circulation of the Blood, which has occasion’d forne to run into amistake, tbinking the Circulation is to be explained forne other way, thanby the Influx of the Animal Spirits into the Nerves, which they endeaveur10 proveby an Experiment on a Dog, of tyingth tlntertoftal and Eighth Pat *•of Nerves, before they enter the Cavity of the Breast, and yet the Dogfhall live 2 or 3 Days tbereafter. But except they can tyc ali the Vertebral
