those Seeds that ha ve only a Fragrant Smell and a Pangent Tast alone;those that haveboth Odorous Emanations and a Brisk Tasttogether, andthose that are Insipid and have nofmartTast.

In thefirst place we musl fet aside those Oj-/r made by Expression. For ha-ving tryed Oyl of Line-Seeds, ot Nuts, of Olives, o( Almonds, &c. we foilndthcie would not make Exploßon, or Ebullition, or somuch as any Fermentation ,with our F/ery Meteor. Nor could I without rouch stirring bring them to In-corporate And when they did Incorporate the Heat was but just Sensible ;andtheRealbn maybe because this fort of Ojl, though it mult be allowcdtobe a True Pabulum flamma, for it may be made to Flame all away, yei itis not a True Ojh although it must be allowed to have one Property of Oyj,that it mixes not with Water; yet it doth not stand the Test of the Fire, forif you DtJltU it, you may part from it Water and Earth, and Soot, and atrue Ejj'ential Oyl, which afterward will bear repeated Dißillations withoutany further JJijJhlutien.

Havingsec by thefe Vegetable, but not Essential Ojls, we will briefly exa-mine the Mineral Ojls, of which there are forne, as Ojl of Vttriol, Oyl ofSulphur per Campanam, that have not any property of Oyls, but are ratherAcids, and Corroding Menßruums. There are others which have the trueProperty of Ejjential Oyls , as Oleum Petreoli, and BarbadoesTar higbly Recti-fied, which do not produce any remarkable Heat, much ltfs make an Ebul-Jition , or Exploßon : Nor does that Active Ojl of Ambtr do any thingmore.

The Stillatitious Oyl of Bees-Wax had much the fäme Effect, when it wasIncorporated with our Compound Fiery Spirit: And this inclines me to be-lieve that the Wax it felf may be a Compound more belonging to a Mineralthan Vegetable Nature.

And now we will examine those Ejfential Ojls, which do Produce greatEbuliition, Exploßon, and Flame, with the Compound Spirit. Of thefe \vehave z forts Vegetable and Animal.

The True Vegetable Ejfential Ojls do ali of them make violent Ebulllitionand Exploßon, and feveral do Actually take Fire and Flame , as the Cata-logue of Experiments do Specify.

If it be enquired into, what fbare the Ojl has in Producing this F;re,whe-ther only it be a Fabulum, or Fewel, for the Spirit to Actuate, and so bemeerly Passive ? Or whether it contributes any Particles that do help to ex-cite this Flame ?

In order to Refblving this Doubt, we consider, That thefe Essential Ojlsareproduced from Seeds that have very Active or Warm Parts or Spirits, such as will easily Ferment and Heat, and having a Warming Influence up-on our Tongues, and do givc Heat to the Stomach and Blood of Animals. That the Seed is the System or Concentration of the whole Piant, and hasSpirit or Ferment enough lodged in it to Aflimilate all that Insipid WatryElement (which contributes Matter to its Grcwth) into its own Nature;from hence the great quantitics of Ejfential Oyls are produced. Its true, outof the Trunks, and Roots, and othcr Parts of Trees, we have Ejjential OjlsVoL III. A a a Extracted
