thereisan OutWard and Iaward Circle of Lesser Stones, and a Round MoHin the Center for Sacrifice. Aaother Sorc of them are only of Earth, anda Trench round about, and a Mote in the Middle, In many of tbese I finda Round Heap of Stones, and Ums in them : It seems a Different Religionaster wards Turn’d these Places of Worfhip into Banal- Places.

V. In Scotland oneof the most Ordinary Soils for Barley-land, isan Earth oisen-moy ...Digg’d and Mix’d wich Beaßs-Dung : In a place near my Dwelling thereis a Piatos Ground, lese than an Aere, outof which for these many Years n.^17. ?- ;?<■past, Earth hath been Digg’d for the said Use; and in Two Tears time itwill Grovf up again, and mi the Excavated Place, so that it continually fur-nifhes Soil for the Adjacent Lands. Another I have in a Farm belongingto my sclf, 20 Miles distant from this, of the (ame Nature and Quality,

Both are a Stiff Clayilh Earth, of a Dark Colour and Moist : It will Growa Foflf-High in 2 Tears. Nothing makes our Land give better Increasc ofBarlej than Sea-Wrack {Alga Marina)’, but Lands osten used to this Ma-nare yield but Bad Oats, and (mali Quantity, and the Husks both of Bar-sey and Oats, that Grow on such Lärms, are Yhickerthan those that Growon other Lands ; and tbese Grains have also greater Mixture of Dar-nel.

The Increase that some Places in our Ifies do Yield is almost Incredible, considering the Climate and Stil, For some will ordinarily yield 15 orEighteen-fold ; as very Honest and Credible Farmers have osten Inform’dme, from their Continual Experience: And most of those Lands that yieldso well, are of a very Sandy Soll, and only Manured with Sea-Wrack. 1 havea Piece of Land in Lothbroom Parißt, that yields every Year Plentifull Cropsof Barlej , without ever having so much as one Load of Mamre t or anykind of Addition , laid on it: And this it hath done past Memory. I haveseen Corn of it scveral Years ; nor doth the Ground grow Leß, nor is itExhaußed , by yielding such Plenty os Corn and Straw, though it receivesno Addition.

There are also some Fields, that appear to be nothing elsc but a Gather-ingofSmall PebbUs, insomuch that Earth cannot wcllbe diseern’d amongstthem: yetdothey yield abundanceofgoodCorn, elpeciallyof Barlej ; andmore than Contiguous Lands that are not Stonj.

As for our Herbs , I have nothing extraordinary ; all I find here, are inHistory, excepting one, which Grows on Stony Sbores. When the Hifb-landers want Ink, they take the Roct of the Iris Palufiru Lutea (YellawWater-Flower dt-luce) and Infuse it 24 Hours in ciear Fountain-Water ;others Boii it a little: the Water will not be Twg'd to any Heighr. Thenthey take a Rough White Tebble, and Rub it continually in the Water ona Knife or any piece of Clean Steel : and in leis than an Hours time , theWater will become very Black, and Tolerable good Ink.

Our Fcrresters alledge, that when Detr are Wounded, they lie on a cer-tain Herb, which grows Plentifully in our Forrefis: and that by its Vertuethe Bleedmg is Stanch’d, and the Wound Healed. I did take a Quantity
