Station, and the Over-seers Beat thosc Young Ones that Loiter in theirBusineß, and will make them Cry, and Work stoutly.

Wol-ves there are great störe; you may hear a Company Hunting in anBvening, and Yelping like a pack o'f Beagles: but they are very Cowtrdly, and dare scarce venture on any thing that Faces them, yet if Hungry wiHpull down a a good large Sheep that flies from them.

Foxes-, they are very much like Ours; only their Furr ü much mcreGrizded , or Gray. »

Every House keeps 3 or 4 Mungrel Dogs to Deftroy Vermine ; such asWolves, Foxes, Rackoons, Opojfoms, 8cc. but they never Hunt wich Hemds,

I suppose because there are so many Brauches of Rivers, that they cannotfollow them. Neither do they keep Grey-Hcunds, because they say, thatthey are subjectto break their Necks by running agaitist Trees; and anyCur will scrve. to Run their Hares into a Hoüenv-Tre».

They have great störe of Land and Water-Tortoife's : but they are verySmall; I think, 1 never faw any in thatCountry to exceed a Foot in Lengfh*There isalso anothersort of Land-Tortcifi, different from the Common Sort, with a Higher Ridg’d Back, andSpeckled with Red fort of Sfots.

I <rags they have of several sorts; one of a Prodigious Largenesi, 8 or 10times as big as any in England, and it makes a Strange Noise, something likethe Bellowing ofa Bull, or betwixt that and the hollow Sounding Noift thatthe Enghjh Bittern makes. Another very Common sott, which they caiiToads, because Black, but I think differs nothing fromour Black Frag. Theyhave Fonds also like ours in England \ and another Small sort of Frog , whichmakes a Noise like PacL-horse tells all the Spring long. Another little GreenFrog , that will Leap Prodigioufly ; which they therefore call the Flyrttg*Ereg. There is frequently heard in the Woods a Ihrill sort of Noise, muchlike that our Sbrevt-Moufi makes» but much (harper ; I could neverleatn the certainty what it was that made this Noise, it is generally in aTree, and some have afferted to mc, that it was made by the Greev-Frog,yet I scarcely believe it. Mr. Banißer assur’d me, it was made by a sortof Scarabeus Eeetle, that is I think füll as big as the Hamming- Bsrd j butneither dol believe that, for this Reason, for I never sew that Beetlefo Lowas the Salts, but always as High up in the Country as the Frtfhcs, and thatNoise is frequent all over the Country.

Lszards, that are Cray, and very Common; the Snakes feed much onthem, for I have taken several of them out of the Bellies of Snakes.

Snakes about 7 several sorts. The Rätsle Snake, so calFd from certainRattleszx. the End of the Tail j theseR attles seem like so many Perifh’d Joynts, being a Dry Husk over certain Joints , and the common Opinion is, thatthere are as many Rattles or Joynts as the Snake is Years Old. I kill’d 4 or5. and they had 11, 12 or 13 Joints each: but the Young ones have noRattles of a Tear or Two j but they may be known notwithstanding, beingvery Regularly Diced, or Checker’d, Black and Cray on the Backs. TheOld Shake and Sbiver these Rattles with wondetful Nimbleneß, when theyare any ways disturb’d; their Bite is very Deadly, yet not always of thefame Force, but moreor less Mortal accordingly as the Snake is in Force or
