When tVie Nature of this Sea and of its several Strelghts diali be moreperfectly difcover’d, it is not to be doubted, but that the whole Voyagebetwixt Us and Japan may be perform’d in the space of 5 or 6 Weeks, atthe most. But in case it should either by Accident or Groß Error, lb fallout, that the Ships should be forc’d to Winter thexe before they could re-cover Home, this likewise might be done without much Danger; providedthat they Avoided the Unadviscd Proceeding of the Dutco , who beingGaüght, and necesiitated to pafi the Winter in the most Northern Climata,Planred themsclves there upon the Highest Lands, in Huts fram’d of ThinBoards (whereas in Laßland it sclf it is Impoflible to Live so: ) but theyOught to Sink their Houses Under-Ground, and to Heap much Earth overthem; Ance 'tis not Posiible, or, at least, extreamly Dimcult for Men toSublist in such an cxceffive Severiry of Winter, unleft they Nest themselvesunder the Earth,

i» XXVIII. From England to Cape Finit Terra, in 44 Deg.N.Lat. ThetivoVoja&ejtothe Baj of Btfcay is fubject to Storms, and the SeaRough, and the Waves run-ni"8 very H.gh.
rrom thence to 34 0 The Wind is Variable : but 11 you be within100 Leagues of the European Continent, it is generally enclin’d to North-Eaft.
From 34. Deg. if you be inclining for theCoast of Africa, or about theMeridianos the Canariet, the Wind is so Certain, and constantly at North-Eafl (or within two Points ) that it is Rare to find it otherwise. Yet in■ Wmter, upon theCoast of Africa there are sometimes WestcrlyStorms, thatare Violent, but ofno long Continuance : And in Summer when it is some-times Calm, the Air will come Variably. These NonhrEaß-Wmds holdmost commonly to 8 °. Nortb Lat. and then begin the Tornado Winds, whichare most part Confin’d between 8°. and 4 0 . North-Latitude ; They are sei-dom or never more Southerly : but on this side the Line they have sometimesbeen met between 11 and iz°. North Lat. These Tornadoes are UncertainWtnds, blowing from all Points of the Corti paß in the fame Hour, and some-times the Wind Shifts thus without being Intermitted , and otherwhiles itwill be stark Calm, almost between every Puff. They are so Confuscd, that let 4 or 5 Ships Sail together as near as is sitting for Ships that keepCompany, at the fame instant many times every Ship (hall have a Severaland Coritrary Wind. And this Place is almost always Infested with HorribleThundtrs , Lightnings and Rain. And the Nearer you are to the AfrickShore, so much more dreadtul is the Thun der and Rain : but the ftmherWefinrard you go, theThunder and Rain will be Lest, and the Wind not soUncer tam ; so that ifyou goas far Weß, as the Meridian of the Eaß-ßde ofBrasil, there is little Thunder, neither doth the Wind come down in suchPuffs and Fiaws ; but between 4 and 8 °. it is most inclin’d to Calms, andvery great and thick Fogs, and the Rains come not in such ViolentShowets.
