&e. änd eV\e Sankt of Anmalt \ others tue Latent, and Discovartd to ui bythc Effects the scveral Families of.S<j//,and atber chings,may haveupon them»Concerning the Apparent Cfiltars of Vege:abies and Awmels, and the vari*ous Effects of different Saks in Changing them from One Colour to another,we may have many Instances in Mr, Boyle. And if we might, with thegood leave of that Honourable and Learned Persen, Range them aster ourFafhion, we fhould give you at least a New Prospect of them, and observe toyou the Conformity and Agreement of the Effects of Sah on the divers Partsof Veget abies : Vtz.

i. That Acui Saks Advance the Colours of Flowers and Benies j that is,according to the Experiments of Mr. Boyle, they make the Infusioni of Ba~

Uufiium or Pontgrartat- Flowers, Rei- Roses, Clove-jilly-Flowers, Meferton,Pease-bloom, Vtolets, Cyanus-Flowers, of a Fairer Red-, alse the Juices of theBerries of Ltguftrum, of Black Cherries, Bucktborn-Berries, of a muchFairer Red: and to the sime Purposc AcidSalts make no great Alrerationsupyn the Wbste Flowers of Jafimn and Snow-drops. 2. That Urimus Saks,and Alcaly'}, on the contrary, quite Alter and Change the ColoHrs of thefame Flowers now named, and the Juices of the siid Berries also from Redto Green-, even Jasmin and Snow drops. z. Again, that in like mannerUrinous Spirits and Alcaly's Advance, at least do not quite Spoyle the Coflours of the Juices of Leaves ot Vegetables , of thetr Wood and Root. ThusMr. Boyle teils us, that Urinous Spirits and Alcalfs make the Tellow Jnfusionsof Madder-Roots , Red-, of Brazil-wood , Purplifh ; of Lignum Nephriticum,

Blew the Red Infusion of Log-wood, Purple ; of the Leaves of Sena, Red,

4. That on the contrary, AcidSalts quite Alter and Change the siid Infusionsfrom Red or Blew, to Tellow.

In the next place we would Note to you the Effects of Saks upon Ani-nuis, in the Production and Change of Colour s : Buc the Instances are ver yFewor none, that I meet with in any Author; the Purple-Fifh being quite Fot n.out of Use; and Cochineil and Kermes are by most Questioned, whether vr -they are Animals or no ; butl think, we may confidemly believc them bothto be Infefts, that is, Wormsor Cbryfalys’s of respecti ve Flfs in proxima Feo- Sea.xxvxu.jtura- We find then, and have Tried concerning Cochineil (which of it felfis Red,) that upon the Affusion of the Ojl of Vitriol, that is an Acid Salt , itStrikes the most Vivid Crimfon that can be Imagined j and with UrinousSalts and Alcalfs , it will be again Changed into an Obscure Colour ’twixt aViolet and a Purple.

Concerning the Apparent Colour s in Flowers, we think we may asiert;

7. That generally AII Red, Blew and White Flowers are immediately, uponthe Affusion of an Alcaly, Changed into a Green Colour, and then, in pro-cess of no long time, turned Tellow. 2. That all the Parts of Vegetables,which are Green, will in like manner strike a Tellow with an Alcaly. 3. Thatwhat Flowers are already Tellow, are not much Changed, if at all, by anAlcaly or Urinous Spirit. 4. The Blew Seed-kusks ot Glasium Syl-vefire Oldgathered and Dry, diluted with Water, stsin a Blew, which upon the Af-tusion of Lye strikes a Green', which Green or Blew being thus Touthed
