MONUMENTA PULVERIS

PYR 1 I

BERTHOLD SCHWARZ .

Berthold Schwarz was generallyconsidered to be the inventor of gun-powder, and only in England hasRoger Bacons claim been upheld, though there are English writers whohave pleaded in favour of Schwarz. Most writers are agreed thatBerthold Schwarz invented the firstfire arms, and as nothing was knownof an inventor of gunpowder, it wasperhaps considered justifiable to giveBerthold Schwarz the credit thereof.

There is also some ambiguityas to when Berthold Schwarz lived. The year 1354 is sometimes men-tioned as the date of the invention, and is also the one to be inferredfrom an inscription on the monumentin Freiburg . But considering thatthere can be no doubt as to themanufacture in England of gun-powder and cannon in 1344, that wehave authentic information of gunsin France in 1338, and in Florence in1326, and that the Oxford manuscriptDe officiis regum of 1325 (Fig. 69)gives an illustration of a gun, BertholdSchwarz must have lived long before1354 to have been the inventor ofgunpowder or guns.

There is good reason for assum-ing that Berthold Schwarz lived inFreiburg in Baden as a Franciscanmonk, but it is also fairly clear thatSchwarz was neither his secular norhis monastic name. In old booksand pictures he is often styled Schwarz, but just as often Bertholdus Niger or NigerBertholdus, which is probably dueto the fact, that he was reputed to be

BERTHOLD SCHWARZ .
