The chief ftrefs, in thefe examina-tions, is laid upon Mathematics and NaturalPhilofophy and the greateft proficients inthefe are placed higheft in the' lift of honours.When the examination is completed, the can-didates are arranged in claffes, according totheir refpeftive merits. The firft clafs arecalled Wranglers, and the fenior Wrangler isconfidered as the firft man of his {landing inthe Univerfity. The two next clafles aretermed Jenior and junior Optimes And thefeare all the degrees of honour. The reft ofthe candidates, if their ignorance is not tooglaring, are fuffered to have their degrees ina fort of multitude; and are fometimes jo-cofely denominated, by their fellow Students,,
