Foundation.] I HIS College dates its firftFoundation from a purchafe, made by RichardBadew, or Badow, of Great Badow, nearChelmsford, in EfTex, Chancellor of the Uni ver-ity, in the.year 1236, 20th Edward III . uponwhich he erected a finall College, and placed thereina Principal and fome Scholars, who lived there attheir own expence; or, as it has been aflerted, byan allowance from the University ; and the Ori-ginal name of the College , TJniverfity Hall , maybe thought, in fome degree, to countenance thefuppofition; though that title might, with equalprobability, be derived from the fituation of itsFounder, as Chancellor.
