Foundation.] — I HIS College dates its firftFoundation from a purchafe, made by RichardBadew, or Badow, of Great Badow, nearChelmsford, in EfTex, Chancellor of the Uni ver-ity, in the.year 1236, 20th Edward III . uponwhich he erected a finall College, and placed thereina Principal and fome Scholars, who lived there attheir own expence; or, as it has been aflerted, byan allowance from the University ; and the Ori-ginal name of the College , TJniverfity Hall , maybe thought, in fome degree, to countenance thefuppofition; though that title might, with equalprobability, be derived from the fituation of itsFounder, as Chancellor.

This eftablifhmcnt was, however, doomed tocontinue only fixteen years, when, by an accidentalfire, the whole building was defiroyed. Dr. Ba-dow being himfelf unable to defray the charges ofrebuilding the College , yet equally anxious for thepermanent eftablifiuncnt of his defign, upon this
