Richard Sterne, Archbifhop of York, 1664,16th Car. II. After taking orders, Mr. Sterne wasappointed Chaplain to Archbifhop Laud; and wasparticularly aftive in conveying away the Collegeplate for the fervice of the King, which fo highlyoffended Cromwell, that he caufed him to be feizedand conveyed to London , where he was fent onboard a fhip laying at Wapping, put under thehatches, and treated with the greateft inhumanity.He, however, obtained permiffion to attend andperform the lafl offices for his friend on the fcaffold.After living in great obfcurity until the Reftoration,he was made Bifhop of Carlifle, and afterwardstranflated to York, This Prelate was a man ofgreat worth and eminent abilities. He compiled aSyflein of Logic, and wrote a Commentary uponthe 103d Pfalm. He read the Bible with fo muchattention, that he enumerated no fewer than 3600rrors in the tranflation. The Whole Duty ofMan has been generally * attributed to him ; butit is now pretty well alcertained not to be his f.
