1 HE fcite of this College was anciently aiiHoftel for Students, without any endowment, butwho lived entirely at their own cxpence. It wasenlarged at different periods, by Richard Ling, Chan-cellor of the University , Thomas Walfingham, andothers. In the reign of Edward III . Richard Crau-dene, Prior of Ely, purchafed it for the receptionof his Monks , who reforted to Cambridge to pro-fecute their ftudies; but foon afterwards fold it toWilliam Bateman, Bifhop of Norwich, who,in the 26th of Edward III . 1351, having obtaineda licence from the King, founded this Hall, whichhe dedicated to the Holy Trinity , in 1347- He ap-pointed a Mafter, two Fellows, and three Scholars,to be Students in the Civil and Canon Law , andone Fellow, to Trudy Divinity, and to be Chaplainto the Society.
This learned Prelate , as Fuller fays, lived to beEp : fcopus in Patria, having been born at Norwich.He was of a flout fpirit, and eminently fkilled inthe Civil and Canon Law . Edward III . fent himE 2
