Cams College*

Founders.] — I H E building of this Collegewas begun by Edmund de Gonville, Re&or ofTerrington and Rufh worth, in Norfolk , who,through the intereft of Walter de'Mamey, obtaineda licence, or charter, of King Edward III . Anno13*8, to incorporate the fame.

The feite of this College was originally on thefpot now occupied with the Garden and Tennis-Court of Bene’t; but Dr. Gonville, who died foonafter its commencement, having left a large fum ofmoney to Dr. Bateman, Bifhop of Norwich, tofinilh and endow it, the Bifhop, in confcquence ofan agreement with the Mailer and Fellows of Be-ne’t, changed the fituation to the neighbourhood ofTrinity Hall, which he himfelf had founded; andafter faithfully performing the duties of his trull, hegave it the name of Gonville Hall, and appointed aMailer, four Fellow's, and two Scholars.

After a lapfe of 200 years, this College was def-tined to have a fecond Founder in Dr. JohnCaius ; who had himfelf, when very young, beenF 2 admitted
