Nicholas Cloose, Bilhop of Carlifle, and af-terwards of Litchfield, anno 1451 Henry VI .placed fuch confidence in this Prelate, that he madehim overfeer and manager of all his intended build-ings for this College. He (moll probably, thoughfome fay his father), was archiiedl of the Chapel ;a work iufficient to dillinguifii his name among themoll Ihining chara£ters of antiquity. All know-ledge of arts and fciences, at that time, centered inthe Clergy ; and it was no uncommon thing for thehigheft dignitary to prefide over the King’s works.Thus William of Wykeham , Bilhop of Winchef-ter, was overfeer of the works of Windfor Callle.
