Bishops and eminent Men.
Hugh Latimer , Bilhop of Worcefler. Atthe age of fourteen, Latimer was fent to ChrifPs'College, where he took his degrees; at which timehe was a zealous Pap ill, and was honoured with theoffice of Keeper of the Crofs to the Univerfity. Atthirty, he became a Proteflant, and one of thetwelve licenfed Preachers from Cambridge ; onwhich occafion he promulgated his opinions withgreat freedom.
He was not long after fummoned before CardinalWolfey, on a charge of Herefy; and obliged tofubferibe certain articles of faith, which he certainlydid not believe.
In 1531, having refumed his invedlives againflPopery, he was again fummoned, and again obligedto fubferibe. In I 535 > through the influence ofAnn Boleyn , to whom he was Chaplain, Henrypromoted him to the Bi/hopric of Worcefler; butin 1 539’ rather than fubferibe to the fix articles, herefigned his mitre, and retired into the country. Afliort time after, on being charged with fpeakingagamft the articles, he was committed to the 1 ower,where he continued till the death of Henry the
Eighth.
