Implements of Hujhamlry. — Draining , Marking, Hoeing, Ploughs. 13
The Double Mould-Board-Plough is a kind of plough that may fometimes beemployed with advantage in making furrows, and fetting potatoes, cabbages, andother fimilar crops, and in earthing up thofe and other vegatables that are plantedin rows. The fame purpofe may, however, frequently be anfwered by a ploughof a lefs expenfive and lefs complex kind.
In the furface-draining of land, different forts of ploughs are in ufe in differentplaces, according to the difference of the foils, and the objects of the farmer.
The Common Draining- P lough, which is employed in fome of the midland counties, for the more general purpofes, is a good, and not very expenfive, tool. And the Mole-Plough, invented by Mr. Adam Scott, and as improved and made ufe of in themidland counties, is likewife an implement of this kind, which, in fuitable foils andfituations, as in pleafure-grounds, and where much regard is had to the furface-appearance of the land, may be of considerable benefit in forming temporary drains. It makes a drain wiihout opening the furface any more than merely for the paflageof a thin coulter, the mark of which foon difappears. This inftrument is chiefly em-ployed in fuch grafs-lands as have a declination of furface, and where there are notmany obstructions to contend with ; but it may be ufed in other kinds of land, ason turnip-grounds that are too wet for the Sheep to feed them off, or where onaccount of the wetnefs the feed cannot be put into the earth. With this plough thedrains Should be made at the distance of ten or fifteen feet in Straight lines, andall fo contrived as to difeharge tbemfelves into one large open furrow, or grip, atthe bottom of the field. As it requires great Strength to draw this implement, itcan only be ufed where a good team is kept. It is fuggeSted by a very intelligentpractical agricultor, that in deep clayey foils it may be highly ufeful, but that wherethere are beds of gravel or fand intervening, it cannot be employed with advantage.
The Draining- Fur row-P lough is another plough of this clafs, which may be em-ployed for making large open furrows, by which the water may be taken oft' fromthe furface of the land. It will frequently be found a necelfary tool in thofe clayeyfoils where water Stagnates on the furface of the ground, and which cannot be re-moved by the more general modes of under-draining.
The Marking-Plough is an ufeful instrument for the purpofe of Straighten-ing, as well as regulating the distance of ridges, where the practice of drillingis in ufe.
The Single Hoe-Plough is likewife an implement which, from the great Simplicity ofits construction, may be of much utility in Stirring the mould in the intervals of grain,or other crops, and laying it to the roots of the plants, thereby destroying and pre-venting the growth of weeds. The mould-board in this plough is fo contrived that
