Happily for the human race, thedespotic system of Turkish government, foundedon such illiberal fanaticism as has extinguishedscience in Egypt, in Assyria, and in Greece, itsthree favorite mansions in ancient times , wasprevented from ^extending its dominion over Eu-rope, and from suppressing liberty, learning, andtaste, when beginning to make succesiful effortsto revive there, and again to bless, to enlighten,and to polish mankind.
