the Head of a small PinJ from the Discoloured Sursace af the Water, andin it I observed 4 sorts of Animal: . In the Ciear part of the Drop were7ü-o Kinds, and both very Small. Some were of the Figure of Ants Eggs jthesr were in Continual Motion, and that very Swift: And I find thatthiskind of Oval Figure is the most Common to the Animalcula found ia Li-tjuors. The othtr fort that were in the Ciear part of the Drop, were muchmare Oblong; about 3 times as Longas Broad: these were Exceeding Ku*merous, but tbeir Motion was Slow, in comparison of the Former.

In the Tbick part of the Drop (for the Water störn whence I took it hadcontracted a Tbtckifh Scum ) / found also Two sorts of Animalt ; as a kind ofEels, like thofe in Vmegar, but much Smaller, and with their Excrcamsmore (harp. These would Wriggleout into the C lear part, and then sud-denly betake themselves back again, and Hide in the Thick and Muddy partof the Drop, much like Common E eis in the Water. I saw here also anAnimal like a large Maggot, whfeh would Contractit seif up into a Sfherircal Figure, and then stretch it seif out again; the End of its Tail appear-ed with a Forceps , like that of an Ear.wig ; and I could plainly sce it Openand Shut its Mouth, from whence Air-Babbles would frequently be Di-scharged. Of these 1 could number about 4 or 5 and they sremcd to bebusie with their Mouths as if Feeding,

These 4 kinds of Living Creatures, I found afrerwards also in manyother Drops of the fame Corruptcd Water (i. e.) in its Film or Scum, which was on the Sursace: For under that, in the Lower parts of theWatet, I could never find any Animals at all, unlefs when the Waterwas Disturbed, and the Sursace Braken down into, and Mingled with, theLower parts.

Ast. 17. 1696. With a much bester Microfcope 1 Examined some Rain-Water that stood Uncovered a prctty while, but had not Contracted anysuch Tbick and Discoloured Scum. as that befofee mentioned had. In this, where it was Chor, I could not find any Animals at all: But a little thinWhitt Scum, that like Grease began to Appear on the Sursace, J found tobe a Congeries of exceeding small Animalcula of Different Shapes andSizes, much like those produced by Steeping Barley in Water.

At the some Time I look’d on a small drop of the Green Sursace of somePuddle-vater, which stood in my Yard: This I found to be altogetherComposcd of Animals of feveral Shapes and Magnitudes; But the most re-tnarkable were thofe which I found gave the Water that Green Colour, andwere Oval Creatures, whosc middle part was of a Grafs-Green, buteachendClear and Transparent. They would Contract and Dilate themselves; tum-ble over and over many times together, and then fhoot away like Fijhes •their Head was at their Broadest end, for they still Moved that way. Theywere very Numerous, but yet so large, that I could Distinguifh them veryplainly, with a Olafs that did not Magnisy very much. Among these wereintersperscd many other smaller and Transparent Animals , like those men-tioned but now, as found in the Whitijh Skum that wason some Rain-water ,which had stood a wbile Uncovered.
