In the 14th and even in the 15thCe ntury powder was frequently dyed.Illustration No. 64 from the CodexGermanicus is explained as follows :

Hochdeutsch.- Willst du eingutes starkes Pulver machen, so nimm4 Pfund Salpeter und 1 PfundSchwefel und 1 Pfund Kohle und 1Unze Salpetri (Salpratica) und 1 UnzeSalammoniak, Item und 1/12 TeilKampher, und stosse das alles wohluntereinander, und tue gebranntenWein dazu, und stosse damit ab, unddörre das wohl an der Sonne, so hastdu ein überstarkes beliebiges Pulver,von dem ein Pfund mehr tut, alssonst drei Pfund tun möchten, undbewahrt sich auch wohl und wirdbesser, je länger es gelagert wird.

Im 14. und auch noch im 15.Jahrhunderte hat man Pulver häufiggefärbt. Die Abbildung No. 64 ausdem Codex Germanicus No. 600trägt die folgende Legende :

Si tu veux obtenirune poudre bonne et puissante,prends 4 livres de salpêtre, 1 livre desoufre, 1 livre de charbon de bois, uneonce de salpratica, une once de selammoniac et un douzième decamphre, broie et mélange complète-ment et ajoute de leau de vie et tri-ture à nouveau, puis laisse biensécher au soleil et tu obtiendras ainsila meilleure des poudres, dont uneseule livre est équivalente à trois duneautre : elle se conservera bien etsaméliorera avec le temps.

Au XIV ème et même au XV èmesiècle, il était dun fréquent usage deteindre la poudre. La figure 64 pro-venant du Codex Germanicus se litainsi :
