JlIAVING finished that part of the Courfewhich relates to Language and Style, we arenow to afcend a ftep higher, and to examine thefubjedts upon which Style is employed. I beginwith what is properly called Eloquence, or Pub-lic Speaking. In treating of this, I am to con-fider the different kinds and fubjedts of PublicSpeaking ; the manner fuited to each ; the pro-per diftribution and management of all the partsof a difcourfe; and the proper pronunciation ordelivery of it. But before entering on any ofthefe heads, it may be proper to take a view ofthe nature of Eloquence in general, and of theHate in which it has fubfifted in different agesand countries. This will lead into fome detail;but I hope an ufeful one , as in every art it is ofgreat confequence to have a juft idea of the
